Welcome to Institute of Energy and Process Engineering (IEPE) at ETH Zürich!

At IEPE we leverage our expertise in Processes, Materials, and Energy System Engineering to deliver cutting-edge research and top-tier education.

At IEPE we address the pressing societal challenges of Energy, Sustainability, and Health by interfacing core aspects of engineering and process design, encompassing materials science, nano and biotechnology, photonics, and computer science with core disciplines of science such as physics, chemistry, and biology.

Energy and Sustainability

We target the realization of energy systems that are sustainable and environmentally friendly, economically viable, socially compatible, reliable, and secure. The research strengths of IEPE lie in the disciplines of thermodynamics, heat & mass transport, chemistry & materials, and system modeling. We exploit these strengths to address energy-related problems that cover a wide range of physical phenomena ("multi-physics"), length/time scales ("multi-scaling"), and levels of integration ("complexity"). IEPE is well integrated into the Energy Science Center, which benefits from synergies between complementary energy-related expertise and strengthens research co-operation among industrial and academic partners in the energy sector.

Health and Wellbeing

IEPE is also at the fore front of developing novel technologies and systems which contribute to address fundamental questions related to health, early diagnosis of diseases, detection of health threats, and novel forms of treatments. These activities are conducted in close partnership with academic collaborators from other departments, medical institutions, and the biotech industry.
